
Golf has a language all its own. Walk onto a course without knowing the terms and you’ll feel completely lost. Here are 50 essential golf terms every beginner needs to know — explained in plain English.
Scoring Terms
- Par: The expected number of strokes for a hole or round
- Birdie: One stroke under par on a hole
- Eagle: Two strokes under par on a hole
- Albatross (Double Eagle): Three strokes under par — extremely rare
- Bogey: One stroke over par
- Double Bogey: Two strokes over par
- Triple Bogey: Three strokes over par
- Ace / Hole in One: Completing a hole in a single stroke
- Handicap: A numerical measure of a golfer’s playing ability
- Gross score: Total strokes taken, before handicap adjustment
- Net score: Gross score minus handicap strokes
Course Terms
- Tee box: The designated area where you start each hole
- Fairway: The short-cut grass between tee box and green
- Rough: The longer grass on either side of the fairway
- Green: The closely mown putting area where the hole is
- Pin / Flagstick: The pole with flag marking the hole location
- Bunker / Sand trap: A hazard filled with sand
- Water hazard: Any lake, pond, stream or ditch on the course
- Out of bounds (OB): Areas outside the course boundary — penalty stroke
- Dogleg: A hole that bends left or right like a dog’s hind leg
- 19th hole: Informal term for the clubhouse bar after your round
Shot Terms
- Drive: Your tee shot, usually with a driver
- Approach shot: A shot aimed at hitting the green
- Chip: A short, low shot around the green
- Pitch: A higher, softer short shot to the green
- Putt: A shot on the green rolling the ball toward the hole
- Lag putt: A long putt designed to get close to the hole, not necessarily in
- Flop shot: High, soft shot over an obstacle — advanced
- Punch shot: Low shot to avoid wind or tree branches
- Draw: A shot that curves gently from right to left (right-handed golfer)
- Fade: A shot that curves gently left to right
- Hook: A severe draw — usually unintentional
- Slice: A severe fade — the most common beginner problem
- Shank: Ball struck from the hosel of the club — goes sideways
- Whiff: A complete miss — counts as a stroke
- Mulligan: An informal do-over (not allowed in official play)
Equipment Terms
- Driver: The longest club, used for maximum distance off the tee
- Iron: Clubs numbered 3-9 used for approach shots
- Wedge: High-lofted clubs for short shots around the green
- Putter: Used to roll the ball on the green
- Hybrid: A club combining features of woods and irons
- Loft: The angle of the clubface — more loft = higher, shorter shots

- Relief: Allowed movement of the ball without penalty in certain situations
- Provisional ball: A second ball played when the first may be lost or OB
- Unplayable lie: Ball in position you can’t hit — take a penalty and drop
- Fore!: Warning shout when your ball might hit other players — always yell it
- Gimme: A putt conceded by playing partners in casual play — counts as one stroke
- Match play: Format where each hole is a separate contest
- Stroke play: Total stroke count over the full round — most common format
