The full rulebook of golf is 200+ pages. As a beginner, you don’t need to know all of it. But there are 10 rules you absolutely must understand before stepping onto a course — both to avoid penalties and to avoid holding up other players.
Rule 1: Count Every Stroke (Including Whiffs)
Every swing counts — even if you completely miss the ball. A whiff (complete miss) counts as one stroke. There are no do-overs in official golf. In casual play, “mulligans” (informal do-overs) are sometimes allowed — ask your playing partners before the round.
Rule 2: Out of Bounds (+1 Penalty, Replay from Same Spot)
If your ball goes out of bounds (marked by white stakes), you must replay from the same spot and add a one-stroke penalty. So if you hit your drive OB, you’re now hitting your third shot from the tee. This is called “stroke and distance.”

Rule 3: Water Hazards (+1 Penalty, Drop Behind)
If your ball goes into a water hazard (marked by yellow stakes), you can drop a ball behind the hazard on the line between the hole and where the ball entered, add a one-stroke penalty, and play from there.
Rule 4: Lost Ball (Same as OB)
If you can’t find your ball within 3 minutes of searching, it’s officially lost. Same penalty as OB: stroke and distance. You can play a provisional ball (announce it before searching) to save time.
Rule 5: Play the Ball as It Lies
You must play the ball from wherever it lands — in the rough, behind a tree, in a divot. You cannot move your ball to a better position (unless local rules allow preferred lies on the fairway).
Rule 6: Unplayable Lie (+1 Penalty, 3 Options)
If your ball is in a position you literally cannot hit it (against a tree trunk, in thick bushes), you can declare it unplayable and take a one-stroke penalty. Your three options: replay from the original spot, drop within two club-lengths, or drop behind the spot keeping it between you and the hole.
Rule 7: Don’t Touch Your Ball on the Green (Without Marking)
On the putting green, you may pick up your ball to clean it — but first you must mark its position with a coin or ball marker. Replace it in the exact same spot before putting.
Rule 8: Maximum 14 Clubs
You are allowed a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag. Carrying more results in a two-stroke penalty per hole (max 4 strokes) in stroke play. As a beginner with a standard set this won’t be an issue.
Rule 9: Don’t Improve Your Lie
You cannot press down grass behind your ball, move loose impediments to help your shot, or bend branches out of the way. You may remove loose impediments (leaves, twigs) near the ball but cannot improve the ground around it.
Rule 10: Shout “Fore!” to Warn Other Players
If your shot might hit other golfers, immediately shout “FORE!” as loudly as you can. This is both a courtesy and a safety requirement. Don’t hesitate — yell it the moment you see the ball heading toward people.
